I’m a little embarrassed to admit I’d never previously hiked on the Little Horse TrailI’m lucky to live close to Sedona and have driven in passed it dozens of time – I just always chose a different spot to spend a few hours.
This wasn’t the first choice either. I originally set out to go to Soldier’s Pass, but the parking lot was full (it only holds about 20 spots and we just missed the last one). So feeling bummed, I headed back toward home with thoughts of doing a loop around an old stand-by – Courthouse Butte Trail. But as I was ready to pass the parking lot for Little Horse, a little voice in my head told me to turn. And as it turned out, I was not disappointed. In fact, it may be my new favorite (“new favorites” happens a lot in Arizona) to bring the visitors when they come to town.
It has great views and is a fairly easy trail (some mild hills). And you at least need to take it Chicken Point (yes, that is the name) and back – it is NOT a loop!
There may or may not be a moral to this story – “Don’t judge a trail by its name”, “Listen to your inner voice”, “The parking lot is full for a reason”, but you can definitely learn from my “embarrassment” by not skipping out on “Little Horse” the next time you are in Sedonda!
